Transmitting The Ecological Footprint in a visual and attractive way
Graphic design, Graphic production, Illustration
SED, (Solidarity, Education, Development) is the Marist NGO for International Cooperation, Education for Development and Volunteering and as its acronym indicates, it pursues three fundamental objectives: cooperation for development, education for development and the promotion and training for voluntary work.
The NGO, which works in more than 30 countries, reaches more than 270 million project beneficiaries worldwide.
What was our challenge?
SED created an Education for Development project in which it proposed to develop an exhibition that would explain the Ecological Footprint as its main objective. The key was to do it in an attractive and very visual way, avoiding materials that usually are full of text and with basic and boring images. Therefore, our challenge was to capture the problem of the Ecological Footprint in a story, in order to raise awareness of the environmental crisis we are experiencing on our planet and to reach the public with a pleasant message that also raises awareness of such an important issue.
What did we do?
The first thing we did was a thorough research on this subject and identify its target audience, in order to empathize with it and internalize the project.
We devised a series of illustrations that, like a comic book, would accompany the texts about the Ecological Footprint that the client gave us. In most of the images, a common character, a squirrel, served as the thread that from outside the earth observes what we are doing with our planet.
The texts provided by SED were given a twist in order to give them a close and young feel, but without losing the rigour of the immense problem that we are dealing with in this project and that concerns us all.
We worked hard to illustrate the 12 charts with a modern and very striking image, but at the same time to raise awareness about the situation of our planet, and to make children and young people understand the basic concepts of the project: what is the Ecological Footprint, what impact does it have, how can we calculate our Ecological Footprint, …
We established the same structure for each of the graphics to maintain consistency and a line of argument. For each creativity, we developed personalized hand illustrations that we then digitized so that we could work on them and integrate them into the final artwork and so that they could be used by the client in the exhibition and other materials.
Once finished, we produced the exhibition in roll-up format so that it could be easily moved around different points of the geography and so that they adjusted to the budget.
